Emanuel Gave Blagojevich List of Names

Emanuel Gave Blagojevich List of Names
Law enforcement sources tell Fox News Chicago that Obama chief of staff Rahm Emanuel had multiple conversations with Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich and gave him a list of "acceptable names" for filling Sen. Barack Obama's Senate seat.

The conversations between Emanuel and Blogojevich were reportedly taped. Those would be tapes worth hearing -- without the bleeps.

how so? Giving a list of recommended names doesn't mean anything weird happened. Only if there was bribery involved is there a problem. Outgoing senators often make recommendations about who they'd like to see fill the seat. Just a suggestion.

Agreed. But there's at least a potential for a scandal involving the Obama administration now. I know, they said no one in the administration has been implicated...but it will be interesting to see what was said in those conversations between Blaggy and Rahm.

Anyone want to jump in now and bash Campbell Brown for having demanded more transparency from Obama on this issue?

Provided this FOX News report is accurate, I'd say Brown was right and a knee-jerk defensive of Obama (he can do no wrong, right?) was wrong.*

(*Now, of course Emanuel could have taken these actions without Obama's knowledge but if that is the case, then Obama has a pretty poor grasp on his newly formulated inner circle.)

I will. It was announced yesterday that Obama's staff was producing a list of all their contacts with Blagojevich, and this is obviously part of that disclosure. And by the way, Obama has NEVER said his staff had no contact with Blag, he said they'd never horsetraded for the seat. Not only does this not prove that Brown's crap was necessary, it proves it was UNnecessary. This is transparency.

I liked her until that show adopted its stupid name. It's so ridiculously boastful. It reminds me of Shirley Chisholm's slogan "unbought and unbossed." Who even brought up the issue? It made Chisholm, a comparatively obscure Congresswoman from Bed Stuy, sound like an idiot. Was she saying the rest of the House of Representatives was both? Who'd bother to buy or boss her anyway? It's as if an unattractive woman wore a t-shirt saying: "uncharmed and unseduced." Campbell works at CNN, where there's plenty of bias and plenty of bull, and she's not Edward R. Murrow. She doth protest too much. It's like thinking you can make O'Reilly a "factor" by calling the show "The O'Reilly Factor."

The only way this scandal could implicate ANYONE including Obama, is to prove a "quid pro quo" took place between Barack and Blago. Either the Obama camp would have to be caught providing the financial gain Blago sought or offered a plush DC job or some other form of compensation which might fall outside the law. I am sure Obama is too smart to fall into that trap, given the Governor's penchant for attracting scrutiny. I do not have a Harvard Law degree yet I know enough to steer clear of the man for fear of an FBI investigation. I doubt that the Prez-elect is that stupid.

How is this bad? What did Emanuel do wrong? The chief of staff for the outgoing Senator spoke to the Governor about their preferences for his replacement. Big Deal. Show me some evidence that Emanuel did something wrong. If you take Fitzgerald at this word that Obama's staff did nothing wrong, then maybe Emanuel told Blagojevich to f-off.

It would be normal behavior for associates of the outgoing Senator to offer a list of prospective successors. What isn't normal is that the person likely to act upon such a list would try to extract valuable items in exchange for an appointment. It seems that the FBI clamped down quickly once a suggestion of a quid pro quo appeared.

agreed with everyone else - having a conversation with a guy and recommending names isn't wrong. MSNBC and the Wash post reported that Obama wasn't very friendly with Blago for some time. Obama probably knew he was crooked and told Rahmbo to handle him with the kid gloves.

*Yawn* Wake me up when they have evidence that Obama offered Blago something in exchange for naming one of his picks. All the evidence points to O not playing ball with Blago, thus the "&&& 'em " line.

I recall from the Meet the Press interview that Obama responded to Brokaw's question on the NY Senator vacancy that he wouldn't get involved in NY politics and added, "I have enough problems with Illinois politics.". Seems like he may have known what was about to happen.

If the Obama team knew what Bagojevich was up to, and that he might be in hot water THEN maybe they wouldn't have given him a list.

Acting normally and giving him a list is indicative of the Obama team being completely out of the loop on Bagojevich's shenanigans.

While I agree with others that there is probably nothing incriminating in the conversation, why didn't Obama just say from the outset that this conversation had took place?

I voted for Obama and really don't think he's mixed up in this, but it does seem odd.

Then again, maybe the report is odd.

From yesterday's Political Wire: "President-elect Obama stated at a press conference that he's "absolutely certain" that no one on his staff was involved in Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich's pay-for-play scheme for filling Obama's old Senate seat. Most importantly, Obama said that his staff is compiling of its own contacts with the governor and his staff and will release that information "in the next few days." "

Had Obama's staff offered compensation for the appointment then the governor would not have said on tape things like "I want something more tangable", or F**k him or any of the other terms which which suggested dissatisfaction with the incoming administration. Rahm may have offered a list and followed by saying the administration would "be appreciative" if anything more were offered Blago would have been content and the tape that busted him would never have been made.

I guess hoping for a honeymoon for the president-elect from rightwingers was nothing but pipedream. They are taking off where they left off on Nov. 4. Now they are making up a crisis where none exists for the new administration. You guys lost. Get over it.

If Fitzgerald says Emmaunel is not a target; and Obama is not a target, they are NOT targets, no matter how much you guys wished they were!

Until we hear differently from Fitzgerald, Blaggy is the one in trouble with the law. Period.

You can say us from the right are making up a crisis, but there is not a right winger involved in this scandal. This debacle is your parties own doing! As a matter of fact ,the fact that Obama has moved towards the middle with his cabinet, and kept Gates, a man villified on this blog, has been a great suprise for us. It must really piss you from the left off though. Didn't he say we couldn't have a Clinton Dynasty in the primaries?

So, stay out! It will sought itself out.

By the way, that leftwing and rightwing labeling is so out. I only mentioned the rightwingers in my post because they appear to still be stuck back there. Listen to their ideas about recovering from the congressional beating they received on Nov. 4.

By the way, I am a former Republican who now votes Independent. I prefer being pragmatic. In other words, Like BO, I just want this country to get past this divide and work for all of us. To me it doesn't matter whose idea moves us forward, so long as we are moving in the right direction.

I dont know what "you on the right" are or are not making up or what "those on the left" are or are not making up.

Bu speaking for myself, I don't believe that anyone's character or moral fiber is determined by their ideological perspective or political party membership.

It is pretty clear that Blagojevich is a scumbag. I do not know of any reasonable left-winger who is defending him. I also know of know of no reasonable right-winger who is defending Ted Stevens.

We have to get off this idea that those in *our* party are good, and those in the *other* party are bad. This way of thinking has torn us up as a country. We need both good democrats and good republicans in office. So whenever we can get rid of a scumbag from either party, it is good for all of us.

I think the timing of this whole thing reeks politics. I think Fitzgerald is a Republican and I think they decided on arresting Blagojevich now instead of later was because they knew his arrest could add some questionable taint to Obama's momentum. After all, why didn't Fitzgerald and company wait until Blagojeich had gone farther than just the talking stage of taking a bribe, why not wait until the bribe actually happened or money was exchanging hands and then bust in and arrest everyone in the room?

Right now all they have is the gov. talking (conspiring) about "it" being golden that he gets to decide who gets the seat and he lets it be known that he wants money for the seat. Why wouldnt the investgators and Fitzgerald have waited for someone to take the bait? Its not like Blagojevich was about to flee to Mexico-- so they had to bust him right now or possibly lose him.

I think they timed this just right- to kinda put a bad taint on Obama before he even takes office.
